What is Malaria?
Malaria is a serious and sometimes life-threatening disease caused by a parasite called Plasmodium.
It spreads to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
Where are the Malaria destinations?
Tropical and subtropical regions of the world – especially parts of Africa, Asia, and South America.
If you are visiting these regions, you should consider taking antimalarial tablets, as well as practicing mosquito prevention methods.
How can I protect myself against Malaria?
Avoid getting bitten
- Sleep under a mosquito net, preferably an insecticide-treated bed net (ITN).
- Use insect repellents on exposed skin — look for ones with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants, especially at night.
- Stay indoors during peak biting times (dusk to dawn).
- Use window screens or close windows/doors in the evening.
