Meningitis (ACWY) Vaccine FAQs

We can confirm and administer any vaccinations you may need, as well as assessing their impact on any pre-existing medical conditions. We administer all required or recommended vaccinations from our Travel Clinic at Priory Business Park, Bedford.

Meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by bacteriavirusesfungi, or parasites.

Bacterial meningitis is the most severe and can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated promptly.

The MenACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W, and Y), which are responsible for many cases of bacterial meningitis worldwide.

  • Sub-Saharan Africa – The "meningitis belt" (including countries such as Nigeria, Chad, and Burkina Faso) experiences frequent outbreaks.
  • Parts of South America and Asia – Certain regions may pose a risk, especially for long-term travellers or those in close-contact settings.

Meningococcal bacteria are spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughssneezeskisses, or shares personal items.

While some people can carry the bacteria without symptoms, they can still spread the infection to others.

Vaccination remains the best defence against meningitis, especially for those at risk.
