Meningitis B can occur worldwide, not just in specific destinations. Risk factors also include ageimmune status, and close-contact living. Destinations of note include:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa – nicknamed the meningitis belt – countries such as Nigeria, Chad, and Burkina Faso experience frequent outbreaks. The highest risk is during the dry season (December to June)
  • Saudi Arabia –  The Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages in Saudi Arabia are known for increased risk due to crowded conditions.  The Meningitis ACWY Vaccination is mandatory for these events, but it is worth considering that anytime there are large gatherings, there is an increased risk of any meningococcal disease.
  • South America – Certain regions such as some cases in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile may pose a risk, especially for long-term travellers or those in close-contact settings.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent bacterial meningitis.

Other helpful preventive measures include practicing good hygiene, such as regular handwashing and avoiding contact with infected individuals.

It's also important to avoid sharing personal items and to maintain a strong immune system through a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Meningitis can affect anyone, but certain groups face a higher risk:

Infants and young children: They have developing immune systems.

Teenagers and young adults (15-24 years):  Close-contact living in settings like dormitories increases risk.

People with weakened immune systems: Conditions like HIV or certain medications compromise their defences.

Those with certain medical conditions: People with complement component deficiencies, or those without a spleen.

People taking complement inhibitors: Certain medications increase risk.

People in close-contact settings:  Where bacteria can spread easily.

The Meningitis B vaccine helps prevent infection

Meningitis, including Meningitis B, spreads through close contact with respiratory and throat secretions. The bacteria can be transmitted by:

Person-to-Person Contact

  • Coughing or sneezing (droplets from an infected person)
  • Kissing or sharing utensils, drinks, or cigarettes
  • Close or prolonged contact, especially in crowded places (dorms, military barracks, etc.)

Carriers Without Symptoms

  • Some people carry the bacteria in their nose or throat without getting sick but can still spread it to others.

Risky Environments

  • Crowded areas (universities, public transportation, events)
  • Hajj pilgrimage (Saudi Arabia requires vaccination)
  • The African meningitis belt (high-risk regions, especially in the dry season)

Vaccination remains the best defence against meningitis, especially for those at risk.
