Ticks that spread tick-borne encephalitis can be found in the UK, however the risk of contracting tick-borne encephalitis in the UK is very low

No. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme disease are distinct tick-borne infections caused by different pathogens.

While both diseases are transmitted by ticks, they are caused by different types of bacteria and viruses

The initial phase of TBE may resemble a mild flu-like illness, and some individuals may recover without progressing to the more severe neurological phase.

However, in cases where the virus affects the central nervous system, the neurological symptoms such as high fever, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, confusion, seizures and paralysis can be very serious.

Preventive measures for TBE include vaccination and avoiding tick bites.

Vaccination is recommended for individuals living in or traveling to endemic areas, especially those engaged in outdoor activities in high-risk regions.

Additionally, practicing tick avoidance strategies, such as using insect repellents, wearing long sleeves and trousers, and checking for ticks after being outdoors, can help reduce the risk of tick-borne infections.

At Smarta Healthcare, we’ve created an entire health clinic. Helping our patients get the care they need, when it matters most.
