Yellow Fever Vaccine FAQs

We can confirm and administer any vaccinations you may need, as well as assessing their impact on any pre-existing medical conditions. We administer all required or recommended vaccinations from our Travel Clinic at Priory Business Park, Bedford.

Yellow fever is a viral infection caused by the yellow fever virus.

It’s transmitted primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly the Aedes aegypti mosquito species.

Yellow fever is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and South America.

Some countries in these regions require travellers to show a yellow fever vaccination certificate (aka International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis or ICVP) before entry to the country, or in certain regions of the country.

Smarta Healthcare will provide a yellow fever vaccine certificate to take with you when you travel.

You can visit the government foreign travel site to find the most up-to-date information about countries recommending and requiring yellow fever vaccination.

Travellers should be vaccinated at least 10 days before travel to allow enough time for the vaccine to work.

For most people, a single dose of the yellow fever vaccine offers lasting protection, and there is generally no requirement for a secondary dose.

Vaccination is a crucial preventive measure against yellow fever.

The yellow fever vaccine is highly effective and provides long-lasting immunity.

Avoid getting bitten by insects as much as possible:

  1. Wear loose clothing with long sleeves and trousers wherever possible.
  2. Use a good quality insect repellent on any exposed skin during the day and especially at night, and make sure you apply it regularly. Apply it after sunscreen, if you're using the two together.
  3. Mosquito nets with insecticide can be used to protect you while you are sleeping.

The symptoms of yellow fever can vary and may include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

In more severe cases, the infection can progress to a more toxic phase, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), kidney failure, and bleeding.

Yellow fever can be fatal, if you develop any of these symptoms during or after your travel, it's important to let your healthcare professional know where you have travelled.

At Smarta Healthcare, we’ve created an entire health clinic. Helping our patients get the care they need, when it matters most.
