What is Typhoid?

Typhoid is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi, which infects the intestinal tract and can spread to other parts of the body. Contaminated water and food, as well as poor sanitation, are common sources of infection. The illness is sometimes referred to as “typhoid fever.”

Where can I get a Typhoid vaccine in the UK?

Smarta Healthcare offers Typhoid vaccinations for patients in and around Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Letchworth, Biggleswade, St Neots, Cambridge, Sandy, Hitchin and Huntingdon, or further afield.

How much does the Typhoid vaccination cost?

The Typhoid vaccination costs £35 or £40 per dose depending if it is an injection or taken orally. 1 dose is required, and family, group and student travel vaccination discounts are available.

If you have any questions about required or recommended travel vaccinations, book an AskMyPharmacist travel health consultation at least 4 weeks before your departure date to make sure you’re ready for your trip.

Where are Typhoid destinations?

Typhoid fever is more common in regions with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. It tends to be more prevalent in certain parts of the world, especially in developing countries. High-risk areas for typhoid fever include:

  • South Asia: Typhoid is endemic in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Afghanistan.
  • Southeast Asia: Countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines have reported cases of typhoid.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Many countries in Africa, particularly those with inadequate sanitation and water infrastructure, are at risk.
  • Central and South America: Some countries in these regions, including parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America, may have higher rates of typhoid.
How is Typhoid transmitted?

Typhoid is primarily transmitted through the ingestion of the bacterium Salmonella typhi. The bacteria is typically spread through contaminated food and water. In some cases, direct contact with an infected individual or an asymptomatic carrier (who has recovered from typhoid fever but continues to harbour the bacteria in their gallbladder) can transmit the Typhoid.

What are the symptoms of Typhoid?

Common symptoms of typhoid fever include:

  • High Fever: Sustained high temperatures, often reaching 39–40°C (103–104°F).
  • Abdominal Pain: Discomfort and tenderness in the abdomen.
  • Headache: Persistent and severe headaches.
  • Weakness and Fatigue: A general feeling of weakness and exhaustion.
  • Constipation or diarrhoea: Bowel habits may be affected.
  • Rose Spots: Pink-coloured spots on the trunk and abdomen.
  • Loss of Appetite: Reduced desire to eat.

If you suspect you have typhoid fever or have been exposed to it, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly, as untreated typhoid fever can lead to serious complications. Treatment usually involves antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional.

How can I protect myself against Typhoid?

Vaccination is crucial in reducing the risk of typhoid transmission, as well as practicing good hygiene, consuming safe and clean food and water. If you’re travelling to a country with high rates of Typhoid:

  • Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables, especially if they have been cut
  • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, especially before cooking or handling food
  • Drink bottled or boiled water

I visited today for travel vaccines. I had no idea about the whole process as this is my first time. I rang Smarta Healthcare and a lovely lady was very informative and friendly and answered all my questions. I brought my 4 year old with me and the Pharmacist was so friendly and patient and didn’t pressurise me at all (I was worried about not taking all the vaccines as money is tight) but she helped me to make my decisions without judging. My daughter did so well with the injection and I think the lovely calm environment and staff played a big factor in this. Thanks so much
