Protect yourself from Mosquitos
What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a viral infection caused by the yellow fever virus. It’s transmitted primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly the Aedes aegypti mosquito species.

Where are yellow fever destinations?

Yellow fever is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and South America.

Some countries in these regions require travellers to show a yellow fever vaccination certificate (aka International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis or ICVP) before entry to the country, or in certain regions of the country. Smarta Healthcare will provide a yellow fever vaccine certificate to take with you when you travel.

Where can I get a yellow fever vaccine?

Smarta Healthcare is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC) offering yellow fever vaccinations for patients in and around Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Letchworth, Biggleswade, St Neots, Cambridge, Sandy, Hitchin and Huntingdon, or further afield.

How much does the yellow fever vaccination cost?

The yellow fever vaccination costs £70 and includes the yellow fever certificate that is required for entry to some countries such as Costa Rica, Philippines, Qatar from countries at high-risk of yellow fever. Some countries even require a yellow fever vaccination certificate when transiting through the country.

Discounts are available for students and family/group bookings.

If you have any questions about required or recommended travel vaccinations, book an AskMyPharmacist travel health consultation at least 4 weeks before your departure date to make sure you’re ready for your trip.

You can also visit the government foreign travel site to find the most up-to-date information about countries recommending and requiring yellow fever vaccination.

How long before travel do I need a yellow fever vaccination?

Travellers should be vaccinated at least 10 days before travel to allow enough time for the vaccine to work.

For most people, a single dose of the yellow fever vaccine offers lasting protection, and there is generally no requirement for a secondary dose.

How can I protect myself against yellow fever?

Vaccination is a crucial preventive measure against yellow fever. The yellow fever vaccine is highly effective and provides long-lasting immunity.

Avoid getting bitten by insects as much as possible:

  1. Wear loose clothing with long sleeves and trousers wherever possible.
  2. Use a good quality insect repellent on any exposed skin during the day and especially at night, and make sure you apply it regularly. Apply it after sunscreen, if you’re using the two together.
  3. Mosquito nets with insecticide can be used to protect you while you are sleeping.
What are the symptoms of yellow fever?

The symptoms of yellow fever can vary and may include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. In more severe cases, the infection can progress to a more toxic phase, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), kidney failure, and bleeding. Yellow fever can be fatal, if you develop any of these symptoms during or after your travel, it’s important to let your healthcare professional know where you have travelled.

I visited today for travel vaccines. I had no idea about the whole process as this is my first time. I rang Smarta Healthcare and a lovely lady was very informative and friendly and answered all my questions. I brought my 4 year old with me and the Pharmacist was so friendly and patient and didn’t pressurise me at all (I was worried about not taking all the vaccines as money is tight) but she helped me to make my decisions without judging. My daughter did so well with the injection and I think the lovely calm environment and staff played a big factor in this. Thanks so much
